New Jersey Ballet will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its production of Nutcracker this December at The Community Theatre at Mayo Center for the Performing Arts, Morristown. The production, with more than 100 performers and full orchestra, will run for ten performances from December 17th through December 26th.
“We are looking forward to taking Nutcracker to The Community Theatre,” said Ballet Director Carolyn Clark. “Our longtime relationship with that theatre goes back to 1977. The beautifully restored and renovated facility is an ideal place to celebrate this exciting milestone in our history.”
The ballet company has been performing at The Community Theatre since it re-opened in 1996 and has established a regular season of Saturday Night performances and several Matinees for Kids & FamiliesSM. This year will be the first time that New Jersey Ballet’s Nutcracker, with full orchestra, will be performed there.
New Jersey Ballet’s Nutcracker is the longest-running original professional production in New Jersey. It debuted at Paper Mill Playhouse in 1971 with Edward Villella (then a star with New York City Ballet) as the Cavalier. Today, after almost 800 performances and a million viewers, it has become a cherished holiday tradition with generations of theatergoers throughout New Jersey and beyond.
The production began touring after fire destroyed Paper Mill in 1980, and continues to travel around the state each year. This year’s stops include bergenPAC in Englewood on December 4 and 5, and Middle Township PAC in Cape May Court House on December 12. In past years, Nutcracker has also toured to other states and in 2008, it became the first full length classical ballet ever performed in India, where it packed that country’s new Performing Arts Center in Mumbai.
Allison Larena, Executive Director of The Community Theatre said,” We look forward to the opportunity to bring New Jersey Ballet’s marquee event to Morristown for its 40th Anniversary. The addition of New Jersey Ballet’s Nutcracker to our schedule will bring new audiences to our venue and make historic Morristown the perfect destination for family holiday entertainment, celebrations and shopping.”
The production features splendid dancing by the company’s acclaimed troupe of international artists, colorful costumes and scenery, eye-popping special effects and a touch of holiday magic that inspires critics to write “It’s a spectacle that never seems to age…magic that should go on and on,” and “One of the best…as good as it gets.”
