New Jersey Ballet, voted the state’s favorite dance company, will open its season on Saturday, November 1 at MPAC in Morristown. The opening night program, entitled From Romance to Tragedy; great moments in ballet, will explore the sweep of human experience as told in the language of dance.

Highlights include Marietta’s Song, a pas de deux of love and longing by the late George Tomal with music by Oscar-winning composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold. In an about-face, NJB dancers will also perform excerpts from Shakespeare’s towering tragedy, Macbeth, based on the version by Vladimir Vasiliev with music by Kirill Mochanov.

Also on the program, Edward Villella’s contemporary Shostakovich Suite is set to the beautiful and haunting music of Dimitri Shostakovich.  And Satanella, from Carnavale in Venice, is one of the gems in the classical repertoire of Russian master Marius Petipa.

A week later, on November 8, NJ Ballet will make its annual visit to Centenary College in Hackettstown bringing its popular Ballet on Broadway program, featuring a pair of high voltage production numbers from Kiss Me Kate and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and special guest artists The Paper Mill Playhouse Broadway Show Choir.

Now that the kids are settled back in school, it’s time to give them a little weekend break. There’s no better way than bringing the whole family to New Jersey Ballet’s Family Matinees. These are colorful fully staged ballets, each performed with original “storyteller” narration so even the littlest children can keep up with ease. New Jersey Ballet’s Pinocchio comes to Union County Performing Arts Center, Rahway, on Sunday October 19. And the double feature Peter & the Wolf and Beauty & the Beast will be on stage at Centenary College on Sunday, November 9.

Coming up: New Jersey Ballet’s 44th anniversary Nutcracker statewide tour begins Sunday November 23 at Middle Township PAC, Cape May Court House. The production will also visit the Levoy Theater in Millville, bergenPAC in Englewood, and finish at MPAC in Morristown for a total of 22 performances statewide.Watch this space for dates, times, and bozx office links.
